Our final post in the weekly Ergonomics Focus is on chairs. Most of us spend the majority of our working day seated at our desk, therefore it’s not hard to see why chairs (or seating) comes high up the ergonomics agenda, you could almost say we’re ending on a high!
The correct way to sit at your desk is to sit all the way back in your chair with your thighs parallel to the floor. Most modern seating is adjustable to fit your posture/height etc. and in most cases an employee can find a healthy seating position just by twiddling the knobs. In some cases though employees do require further help; products on the market to help correct poor seating include the following:
Foot supports: the employee fixes the foot support to the height they require and rests their feet under their desk. This helps improve blood circulation – especially for those who are seated for long periods of time.
Back supports: Fixed to the back of your chair, these are designed to provide proper lumbar support, which will correct poor seating posture by encouraging the employee to sit with a straight back.
With additions most office chairs can be ‘upgraded’ to become ergonomically friendly; given the choice of buying a new chair or looking at support products, we reckon it’s fairly obvious which is the cheaper option!
