Most office workers are pretty much stuck at their desk in front of a computer for 8 hours a day. Unless your idea of fun is balancing your laptop on your lap whilst being spread out over a beanbag chair, then buying a good desk is a must. But what sort of desk would be best for you?
You might consider buying the priciest desk, but if it’s not suited to your work tasks, then you may end up wasting money. On the other hand, you may consider building your own desk to save money. But unless you’re a carpenter, it could go horribly wrong! I do think that the ideal desk for most office workers lies in between these two extremes. Here are things you might consider when shopping around for one:
- Before purchasing a desk, it’s best if you sit at the desk to see if there’s enough leg room and that you can type without having to reach up or down.
- Check that there’s enough room on your desk to fit your monitor on, especially if it’s a big CRT. Experts suggest that you should just be able to reach the monitor with your outstretched fingers and that your eyes should be level with the top of the monitor.
- Consider how much space you use for paper. If you like spreading several sheets of paper on the desk, then you’ll need a larger desk than someone who prefers to just view documents on their computer monitor.
- Check that there is enough storage space for you; ideally there should be at least 2 drawers.
- If you’re required to assemble the desk yourself, then can it be moved back through the doors if you move offices in the future? Most computer desks will involve using glue, screws and other fasteners.
